The Accidental Cheerleader - Mimi McCoy

The debut novel in the Candy Apple series introduces two very different 12-year-old best friends: introverted, quick-to-blush Sophie and outgoing, impulsive Kylie. Sophie reluctantly agrees to be Kylie's partner at tryouts for their middle school cheerleading team. Rather predictably, gymnast Sophie makes the squad, but klutzy (if gutsy) Kylie is instead offered the position of team mascot—a costumed mule. Attending practices without Kylie, Sophie initially feels like an outsider amidst the confident, popular and mostly petty other cheerleaders, but gradually gets sucked into their superficial social sphere. The plot takes a melodramatic turn when Sophie is suddenly shunned by her old and new friends after she dances with a star football player on whom Kylie has long had a crush and whom the head cheerleader dated the previous year ("for three weeks"). Despite such contrivances, the tale convincingly conveys the social pressures of middle school, and the price and precariousness of popularity, offering a cheer-worthy blend of fluff and substance. Perfect for girls aged 9-12.

The Wedding Planner's Daughter - Coleen Murtagh Paratore

This book is as sweet a confection as the cherry cordials its 12-year-old protagonist is so fond of eating. Willafred Havisham is starting to put down roots in Bramble, Cape Cod, where her grandmother runs a candy shop and where she's made a friend. She is hoping that her mother will stay here longer than the two years they usually live anywhere, and that she will remarry. Stella is a successful wedding planner who is unaware that her daughter has been adding her own touch for years: she sews cherry pits into the hem of the gowns for good luck. Next thing she knows she is sewing pits onto a celebrity gown - the wedding was on the beach, meaning it attracted bugs... because of this, Stella feels her business is ruined and the two leave town. The girl's letter to her mother about the meaning of the pits (they represent love) provides emotional heft to what has up to that point been just a pleasant story. Chapters begin with a quote from a book or, less successfully, from a character in this novel. These allusions may prompt readers to look into some of Willa's favorite books and writers.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling

For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the non magic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig. Perfect for all children 8+

The Exiles In Love by Hilary McKay

Grade 5-8A Readers who have been captivated by these British sisters in The Exiles. Ruth, Naomi, Rachel, and Phoebe Conroy are growing up-as evidenced when they succumb to what their grandmother terms "The family failing." Though she makes it sound like an inherited characteristic like freckles, this failing is, in actuality, the tendency to fall in love, as Big Grandma puts it, "Impractically. Desperately; Unsuitably; and usually quite hopelessly." In this instance, events somewhat mysteriously engineered by Big Grandma snowball in a barely controlled fashion to land the Conroys; a wildly charming French boy as a house-guest and later propel the girls on a holiday to Philippe's grandfather's orchard somewhere in France. Big Grandma and the grandfather are as thick as thieves, making readers aware that the family failing may not wear off with the passing of time. The tribulations of young girls in love, attempts to speak and shop in French, a possible ghost in the orchard, and the not-quite-plausible illness of Philippe combine to keep this lighthearted romp bouncing along. It all ends satisfyingly with a wedding. Great fun. Perfect for girls 9-12.
